Backup to the cloud is a rapidly emerging data protection strategy. A typical backup-to-the-cloud solution uses on-premises components (including backup software, media servers, server agents, and disk backup targets) to provide the rst tier of backup and recovery capability. The system then replicates backup data to the cloud in order to provide a second tier of storage for o site disaster recovery and archiving purposes. Moving select workloads to the cloud to lower cost and increase agility has become a priority for organizations of all sizes.
The Cloud Backup
Traditional backup and recovery strategies are too slow, too risky, too expensive, or too complex. On the other hand cloud backups can provide numerous bene ts for organizations, including the following: Rapid restores, Leverage existing backup infrastructures, Near-instantaneous offsite vaulting, Low cost backup storage, and Enhanced security.
Backing Up to Amazon S3
To have a robust backup plan in place, REAN Cloud advises its customers to regularly backup their instance using Amazon EBS snapshots or a backup tool. As a partner solution, REAN Cloud works with CloudBerry Labs for helping our customers backup to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier.
CloudBerry Lab uses the “one machine – one instance” principle of the backup system deployment, which means that every maintained computer needs an individual copy of CBB installed. Nevertheless, you can also backup data from multiple computers using network paths. In the backend it uses multi-part uploads and encryption. Encrypting backups with up to 256-bit strong keys on source side. All data sent to the cloud is also encrypted using the SSL protocols to protect while it is in transit. Reduced data overhead, decreased storage costs, aided bandwidth and accelerated backup completion with optional compression is also available.
Using the tool we can perform both block level and file backups. Files that have been backed up with CloudBerry Backup can be restored to a specified point in time. The master password helps you to protect your backup from unauthorized access. The tool supports multi-part upload, that you to break large files into smaller parts (chunks) and upload them in any sequence, making the process more reliable and faster.
REAN Cloud provided a solution for implementing and managing daily backups for Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). TMT has a CAD software, Solidworks, running on-premise. The solution was set up to implement system imaging, file-level backup of application data, and SQL application database backup. CloudBerry Backup (Ultimate) is being used for Image-based backup and bare metal restore. Amazon S3 is used as the cloud store. An S3 bucket was created for storing the backups and an IAM user was created for providing the right privileges for the CloudBerry Backup tool running on-prem. S3 bucket policies were configured to support access control. Backups are scheduled daily amounting size of greater than 2TB. On top of these services, REAN Cloud also provides TMT with ongoing managed services for maintaining their systems and operational efficiencies.
By having a backup solution in place TMT is able to secure their data utilize the cloud and Amazon S3 for scale and cost benefits. Using CloudBerry Backup they are able to encrypt backups with up to 256-bit strong keys on source side, and also reduce data overhead, decrease Amazon S3 storage costs, aid bandwidth and accelerate backup completion with optional compression.
